MSTP Courses at Northwestern University 2007-2008

Topics in Molecular and Translational Medicine ("MSTP Journal Club") 2007-2008, 4:00-5:15 PM, Ward 12-365

Facilitated by graduate and clinical faculty, first and second year MSTP students participate in a weekly research seminar presenting research articles in several major research areas. The goals of Topics in Molecular and Translational Medicine are to learn to critically read and interpret research literature and how to write and critique a research proposal. Once each year, MSTP students write and present a research proposal that is peer-reviewed by at least one graduate faculty preceptor and by another MSTP student.

The recommeded textbook is Molecular Medicine, 3rd edition, by R. J. Trent, 2005. Click here to view an outline of the 10 chapters. Every third or fourth Wednesday, an MSTP student in the third or fourth year of the MD phase presents a clinical case, reviewing clinical scenarios, pathophysiopathology, and pharmacology and an MSTP student in the second or third year of the PhD phase summarizes recent advances from clinical and translationals research relevant to the disease. MSTP Grand Rounds features a presentation/discussion format with formulation of differentials, focus on communication skills, and understanding of the patient, physician-scientist, and society interactions. All MSTP students attend MSTP Grand Rounds throughout all 8 years of training, as the goal is to review clinical knowledge, scientific progress, and their interrelationship.
