Physician Scientist Alumni of Northwestern University

Northwestern University has a long and proud history in training physician-scientists, meaning physicians who devote most of their time and effort in research ranging from basic to clinical research. The first physician-scientist alumnus of Northwestern University was Dr. Eric Oldberg who received both his M.D.-Ph.D. degrees in 1928. Since then, >200 alumni have earned both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in basic life science.

In 1965-1966, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the NIH launched a new training program, called the "Medical Scientist Training Program," to defray the costs for students completing MD and PhD degrees to pursue careers as physician-scientists. Northwestern University, New York University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine were the first three universities to receive the inaugural MSTP grants from the NIH.

Neil Chi, M.D., Ph.D., Department of Medicine-Cardiology Division, University of California - San Francisco was the 2005 Alumni Speaker at the 2005 MSTP Student-Faculty Retreat.	Lucy Godley, M.D., Ph.D., Department of Medicine - Section of Hematology / Oncology, University of Chicago was the 2006 Alumna Speaker at the 2006 MSTP Student-Faculty Retreat.	Todd Kuiken, M.D., Ph.D., Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering, Northwestern University, was the 2007 Alumni Speaker at the 2007 MSTP Student-Faculty Retreat.
