MSTP Retreat 2004

MSTP Retreat in Michigan at Lakeside Inn on October 29-31, 2004

The 10th Annual MSTP Student-Faculty Retreat was held on Friday night through Sunday afternoon, October 29-31, 2004 at Lakeside Inn in Lakeside, Michigan. The retreat provided time for students and faculty to gather in a relaxed setting, afforded opportunities to build our sense of community through scientific exchange (research talks and poster sessions), professional development (faculty keynote speaker and alumnus speaker), and a variety of fun activities, including canoe and bike rentals, golfing, vineyard tours, bonfires, shopping, a Halloween costume party, and the beautiful, sandy Lake Michigan beach. Dane Chetkovich , M.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Northwestern University. Dr. Chetkovich's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that underlie the targeting of ion channels to synapses and other specialized areas of the dendrites of neurons. In particular, his lab is interested in the targeting of glutamate receptors (GluRs), molecules responsible for most of the excitatory communication in the brain of mammals.

Jose Florez , M.D., Ph.D., graduated from the NU MSTP in 1997 and is an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. Florez' research focuses on the genetics of type 2 diabetes, with particular attention to genes that encode hypoglycemic drug targets.

How to Get There

Lakeside Inn is ~80 miles from Chicago (1.5 hour drive) and the Student Council organized a ride-share for those who did not have transportation.

Lakeside Inn is also accessible via the commuter train (South Shore) to Michigan City, Indiana, from which we arranged rides for to and from the hotel in Lakeside, Michigan (exit at the 11th Street Station in Michigan City, Indiana, ride takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to Michigan City and the cost is $7.55 one way). Times for the train schedule are in Central Daylight Time but the hotel in Lakeside follows Eastern Standard Time (one hour later than CDT). Central Daylight Savings Time ends on Saturday night that weekend.
